Tim Gelnett's Winning Trip to Adirondack Rustic Lodge
|
If you could imagine a place of complete solitude, nothing but nature and
wildlife surrounding you, the sound of freshwater streams, and an
unforgettable view of the Adirondacks… Rustic Lodge is the place.
When NYOC co-founders Dan Leonard and Jim Hanlon called to tell me I won
this trip, it really took a few minutes to realize what I had won. This was the trip
of a lifetime that I got to share with my dad (Bill), brother (Wayne), nephew
(Ryan), cousin (Brian), Wayne’s co-worker/friend (Phil Ewing), and his father
(Harry Ewing).
We arrived at Rustic Lodge around 3:00 pm. Upon arrival, we could not help to
notice the view from the cabin. I think the photos speak for themselves.
The cabin was a hunter’s dream. It was fully furnished with Rustic furniture.
One wall lined with trophy bucks (all taken from the property of course), and
the opposite overlooking Sperry Pond (~200 acre pond).
We went to scout the property until we ran out of daylight. Once back at the
cabin we sat down with the owner, Gregg Spengler, to go over the layout of
the land. Gregg gave us an idea of where some of the deer runs were and
also where the trophy bucks were taken. We came up with a hunt plan and
got a decent nights sleep to set out early the next morning before daylight.

The first day of hunting was unsuccessful. We ended up not seeing any deer. The
weather got up in the fifties so deer were not moving as much as we would have
liked.
The balance of the week was pretty similar. We did see several nice size deer but
were not able to get a decent shot at any of them. There was a six-point minimum,
which we certainly respected.
Rustic Lodge was a great experience even though we came home empty handed.
It was a pleasure meeting Gregg and we really enjoyed sitting down and hearing
about some of the history of the land with him.
There are not many owners that take the time to spend with their “Renters” and
really sit down and share some stories with them. Peggy was also very
responsive to all of our questions leading up to the trip. I certainly plan on
returning to Rustic Lodge someday whether it is during the hunting season or
just to camp. Thanks Gregg and Peggy for everything and you sure have a special
place in Rustic Lodge!
This trip would have never happened if it weren’t for NYOC. Thank you Dan and
Jim for sharing the excitement that is available to the outdoorsman.
