| I set up the hunt with Endless Hills Guide Service for the last 3 days of the turkey season. At 4:50 am my nephew Ross ( the gobbler king) and myself met our guide Dave Nicotra and proceeded to our hunting area. Dave told us that he had been scouting there the morning before and had seen several nice toms in the field that we were to hunt. We got setup in the blind well before first light and waited for the first gobble of the perfect morning. Dave called perfectly for a late season hunt. After hearing several gobbles all was still. Dave said to have faith as he was sure that the birds would work into the field from the roost. At about 7:30 am Dave spotted birds working on the field below us and to the left. As they worked through the field the toms realized the hens that they were with were not interested and between Dave's great calling and a perfect decoy placement, two of the three toms turned their attention our way and began walking into our shooting window. We raised our guns and dropped both birds at the same time. The toms could have been twins inch spurs, 8 1/2 beards, and each tom weighed closed to 18 lbs. I would like to thank Endless Hills for a hunt that will always be told around the campfire for years to come also thanks to NYOC, and their great website keep up the great work and my dues are on the way!! I would also like to thank Dave for being an enthusiastic and energetic guide. He really did his homework and put us on the birds. As Ross and I had both killed a bird earlier in the Spring our hunting was done for the season. I would like to mention that I used the Fox's slate call to get my early Spring bird it has a nice tone and makes great purrs and cuts which I use a lot. The Illusion box call has a nice raspy sound and is very easy to use. One last bit of info we pounded the walleye and panfish on Oneida lake. I live with 70 miles south of buffalo and visit Ross who lives in the area when I can. I hope all you fisherman appreciate the world class fishing that you have up there. We have nothing close to that in the southern tier, and you have it all right at you feet. Yes, I'm green with envy. |
