| Hello, my name is Dan Grubaugh. I am the sole owner and knife maker of Private Collections Custom Knives. I specialize in high quality, hand crafted custom knives that are highly collectible, yet rugged and durable enough to withstand years of use in the field. I use only the highest quality handle materials and blade steels available in today's market. It does cost more to do so, but when completed, the result is an heirloom quality knife that will provide many years of service and will be a special heirloom to pass down to future generations! I got started in the knife business not by making knives, but by hand engraving them. One particular customer had asked me to do some engraving for him. He also asked if I could change the scales (handles) on the knife. I told him that I had not ever re-scaled a knife, but thought that I could do a "satisfactory job" if he really wanted it done. When it was finished, the fella came and picked it up and was ecstatic! He said "you ought to be making knives!" Well, that got things started and here I am today! I use many different materials for the scales with my favorite materials being 20,000 year old fossilized woolly mammoth tooth, mammoth ivory, pre-ban elephant ivory and exotic wood burls! I also like to use reconstituted gemstone such as onyx, jade, charoite (Russian Lavender), turquoise and bloody jasper. My favorite blade steels to use are Damascus, which is made up of multiple layers of steels such as 1095 and 15n20 nickel steel which creates some beautiful patterns. It is not limited to just those two steels, but they are some of the most commonly used. For the stainless blades, I prefer 440c high carbon steel. All of my knives are hardened to a RC of 57-60. This ensures that they will keep and hold a good edge, but can still be sharpened at home or by the owner......you won't have to send it out to be resharpened! Custom orders are always welcome and I usually have several knives on hand that are for sale. Please feel free to contact me with questions or custom orders by phone or email. Thanks for checking out my knives and I look forward to doing business with you! Best Regards, Dan Grubaugh Private Collections Custom Knives PH. 989-834-2680 email dgrub41565@aol.com |
