First off I want to thank USOC for putting together a great hunting & fishing membership program. Hopefully members will read this and promote USOC to family and friends!
Second I want to thank Frontenac Fowler's (Big Jay) for donating the hunt that I went on. Big Jay Barnes is a great guide and a great person, and is faithful dog Captain for doing all the work!
This hunt started the day I got the call that I had won a hunt from USOC. Dan & Jim wouldn’t tell me what the hunt was, and to stay near my phone from 8 to 9 pm. Man I was calling everyone not to call my house as I don’t have call waiting! I was even sending out emails to my daughters that the phone was off limits during this time, and that I would explain later.
I received the call from Backwaters Outdoors Radio and was talking with Johnny D, Dan Leonard, Jim Hanlon and Big Jay Barnes about the hunt with Frontenac Fowlers; it was a one day two person hunt. I haven’t been waterfowl hunting in over 35 years, man was I excited!!! I contacted Big Jay to set up a date and we decided on Halloween, yep I was going trick and treating on this hunt. Big Jim asked that I contact him once I picked someone.
So, I had to pick someone to go with me and try and line up a couple more hunters to fill the boat. This was going to be difficult! Who do I ask first, will it upset someone else that I don’t ask? So I started from the top, I asked my older brother first and he wasn’t available. Asked my friend Chris that I have been mentoring, and he said yes. Good now I need to find two other people to go with us. I sent out a bulk email asking if anyone was interested in doing a waterfowl hunt. A few days went buy and Chris called all upset. He said he forgot he was going out of town for his job on October 30th. I told him that’s ok. He said no its not he really wanted to go! So now I’m back to square one. So I called my younger brother Jeff, he said YES!
Good! Next step is to call Big Jay. I called Big Jay’s cell phone and he was whispering on the phone? Jay I am all set with the 31st and my younger brother is coming. Jay says, Ok. I’m in my tree stand, I’ll send you an email when I get home. Oops!!! Sorry!
I must have sent six e-mails to Big Jay, asking; what choke, what shot size, do we need the waterfowl ID class? Big Jay must have thought I was crazy! So the big day arrived, left my house at 4 am for the drive to Union Springs on Cayuga Lake. Arrived at 5am and we were on the boat and headed to the spot by 6am. Big Jay beached the boat, and asked us to hand out the decoys. While Big Jay was setting the spread we heard a deer take off behind us. We all said “did you hear that”! Now it was time to wait for the sun to come up. Man did we see a beautiful sunrise, we were all taking pictures, and I even ran my video camera a few times. When it was slow I was sending e-mails from my phone only to get a surprise, DUCKS, dropped the phone, and missed the ducks. We were all laughing. We were sitting there talking about everything from work to hunting and family, when Big Jay says duck! Where, right in front of us at the decoys, take’em. I stood up and shot. First duck I have taken in over 35 years, it was a Buffle Head hen. Man is that a beautiful duck. We had plenty of shooting, ok, a lot of shooting! We took five ducks, 2 hen mallards, one drake, and a male Buffle Head. This is the first time I have witnessed a dog doing the retrieving, WOW! Now we should have had a whole bunch more, however, we just couldn’t hit them. The two I took were probably just luck. I promise Big Jim I will do more practicing for the next hunt. I couldn’t even tell you how many ducks came in, but we had plenty of opportunity to shoot! After 6 hours of hunting we decided to head in. We went to breakfast at a little café in town, breakfast was awesome! Now to rate the whole experience, out of a 10, it was a 10! For those that turned me down and couldn’t make the hunt because you were archery hunting. YOU SHOULD HAVE TAKEN THE DAY OFF!!!! I will definitely go back to Frontenac for another hunt, in fact before I left I asked Big Jay about Snow Goose hunting in the spring. Big Jay said he will be in touch and that I am down for the spring hunt. I would highly recommend Frontenac Fowlers for our members to experience! Give Big Jay a call as he does book up fast, you won’t be disappointed! I can’t wait for spring!
Thanks again to Jim Hanlon, Dan Leonard, Big Jay Barnes, Johnny D.

Remember, a bad day hunting is better than a good day at work, and the hunting was GREAT!
