Dave Wolfersberger's Winning Deer Hunt to
Country Wide Outfitters, Ontario Canada
It was the week of December 11th, and there was no snow which was
unusual for this time of the year, I arrived at a camp in Canada that I
had won from NYOC. It was a three day bow hunt. Upon arriving I was
picked up and brought to the lodge by Stephen's girl friend Corin.
Stephen is the owner of the Lodge. After getting my license we headed
for my camp. I was extremely impressed with the fact that Stepen and
Corin were so skilled as archers. Corin was ranked 6th in Canada in
the ladies division and Stephen was 7th in shooting skills for men.
Corin embarrassed us all with her shooting abilities. I, myself lost $5.00
making a bet that Stephen couldn't hit a soda can hanging from a
branch at 45 yards. Not the smartest bet I ever made, because he
nailed it.
I was extremely impressed with the facilities at Country Wide Outfitters.
The lodge was beautiful and had plenty of room. Stephen and Corin were
great hosts. Stephen surprised us all by asking us to get out our bows
and show him we could shoot. I passed the test. Then he went through
the ground rules on what we could shoot. Stephen also had a doe tag
which we drew for on every morning and evening hunt. We all saw does
except when we had the doe tag of course. Three of the people I hunted
with worked for Ruger Arms Co. and they were Bob, Jarred and Charles.
There was a guy from Quebec also who's name was Stephen. This Stephen
spoke no English which was very interesting.
The first morning I saw a nice doe at about 50 yards and of course I had
no doe tag. All the stands were 16' high and very sturdy. There were
ground blinds also. Most were set in the hard woods on the runs. The
weather was so nice the deer were not moving much. We all saw deer
and on Wed. afternoon a nice 6 point came in and when I went to draw on
him he saw me and high tailed it fast. I won the hunt for 3 days only, but
was offered to hunt through the rest of the week at no extra charge
which was very nice.
Thursday morning I hunted and the serving went on my bow. I also had
some car problems so I had to go, but let me tell you I certainly did not
want to. I want to say the later it got in the week the harder Stephen
worked to find us our deer. There was two nice that were wounded and
not recovered the week before. It seemed the deer that were taken were
taken in black powder week. I took a few pictures of them. As of Friday
morning there had been no deer taken, but many were seen. This was my
dream hunt. I was really great! I did not get a deer, but the time in the
woods and with my mates was terrific. The guys in the camp hunted hard
all week and I will never forget this trip. Now I am thinking about going on
another trip with them in the future.
I wish to thank Stephen, Corin and USOC, because without them I would have
never been able to go on this hunt without their help.

Sincerely,

Dave Wolfersberger
