| August 2009 Waiting for July 4th weekend I looked forward to a trip to Jackman, Maine, destination, Bulldog Camp. Fly fishing for brook trout in Enchanted Pond and on site other remote ponds that are located nearby. Traveling from New York to Maine was a easier trip than I thought, especially thinking of the week to come. My first night I stopped in Kittery Maine. Mostly to stop at the Kittery trading post to stock up on more flies. The store is a big sports/hunting outfitters dream. The department downstairs is all for fishing, saltwater, freshwater, and fly fishing. It took a while to check out the selection! Next day about four hours to go I started seeing signs for; Caution Moose. The countryside is beautiful, lots of trees and greenery. Here I am that afternoon Bulldog Camp. They are available for hunters, fisherman, ATV riders, and snowmobilers. The camp is in a setting of cabins, green lawns, and sits on a pond with mountains at your fingertips and with no neighbors on the water or nearby, you are the only people present. The rustic cabins are comfortable, spacious, and supplied with linens, a kitchen, bathroom, woodstove, and an outside porch with chairs. After unpacking I went to check out Enchanted Pond and it was indeed quite big with mountains surrounding it. So it really was like in the middle of nowhere. They have boats on shore to take out fishing and kayaks available. My first evening after unpacking, I took a visit to the cabin of home cooked meals I had a wonderful filling delicious meal of pork roast, macaroni salad, and corn on the cob; A great way to start my adventure. We, a group of six, went to our first pond. Our crew consisted of my girlfriend, Debbie, who accompanied me. She is a better fly fisherman than me. Darren, the owner of the camp and who was our guide, his son, Jordan also a fisherman, Bill Miller, and to our astonishment is a neighbor in New York, a fun, top ace fly fisherman, and doing guide service with Darren and friend at the camp and another fly fisherman, Mark, from New Jersey. The crew of six had caught many trout, lots of fun, and lots and lots of laughs. We piled into two trucks to travel only a short distance away. From there we hiked to the pond and canoed, onto quiet calm water. The evening was warm and the setting surrounded by trees and sky. The fly fishing was off to a start and the fish were hitting our flies. I was gifted with my first sight of moose up close. There were two at the water edge feeding. A great night we had. Day two was a full day of fishing. We again drove out to a different secluded pond. Canoed down a stream, and out onto a large pond. The scenery was breathtaking, not a building in sight. At this pond we watched other fishing by an eagle! The sun was out all day and lunch we rowed to shore. Then back to fishing and many, many trout were caught. All in all what a great time at Bulldog camps and guide service by Darren made this trip well worth the drive! So many thanks to Darren and family and their hospitality. Bobbie Jo, the cook, of the delicious meals and thanks to Sierra for assisting with meals and Jordan for the help with his dad and canoes and fishing. I will always remember this trip and will most certainly look forward to another trip back. Jim Look Jr. |
